“And here I thought to myself, perhaps life isn’t so bad after all. I am here, present in
this very moment, with all my attention to myself and what is in front of me. My eyes
feel so blessed to witness such a scenery, my head and heart both empty and full at
the same time. There is so much to think of, so much to see, so much to feel! What a
wonderful life this can and shall be, even if this moment is only but a dream.”

Inspired by “Wandering by the Sea of Fog” by Caspar David Friedriech, this painting
represents the moment of solitude amid a vast, seemingly endless peaceful scenery
guided by the gentle tides and the soft shades of the sky as the sun sets. The
numerous possibilities of thoughts cross the mind of the anonymous lady as she
standsin front of the calm waves, staring out to the sea while the wind gently blows.
Greatly enamored by this beautiful scenery, she finds herself filled with gratitude for
being able to experience such a moment, filled with hope for what life has in store
for her.

The pastel-toned sunset glowed dimly against the scape, with traces of sunlight
reflecting against the young woman. She dons a cultural garb native to our country
as to be the representation of our local setting, including the palm leaves that lulled
behind her. This artwork is also inspired by fond memories of the artist as she often
finds peace and has meaningful reflections while being by herself on quiet beaches.

In Islam, everything about the life of a person is written in a book, hence
“maktub/maktoob/maktoop”. However, they have a choice between right and wrong. They are not forced. Normally, when we say it is destined or decided, we use them with bad things that happen to us. There are things that you choose and change according to your ability and there are also things that are out of your control, the latter being maktoop. Hence, maktoop is something decided in the past, because the word itself is in the past tense – yet it is something that will happen in the future or is happening in the present. This piece is special to the artist because at some point in our lives, we must understand that some things are within our control and there are some things that are beyond our control. The expression of colour and strokes represents this paradox.
